Cockroaches

What are cockroaches?

Cockroaches are a type of insect, and at the first site of them, you should reach out to us for pest control in Denver. They are common inside our homes and businesses because they feed on many of the same foods we do; their love of food is what typically draws them to our indoor and outdoor spaces.

Cockroaches have a flattened body that is oval with a head concealed from above with a structure called a pronotum. Their long antennae help them to find their way through the dark and find food. A cockroach's six, spine covered legs enable them to move very quickly from hiding spot to hiding spot.

In Denver and Omaha, two cockroach species regularly move into our homes and businesses: German cockroaches and Oriental cockroaches.

  • Oriental cockroaches have an elongated, pill-shaped body that is shiny black. These roaches are known for moving slower than other species of cockroaches.
  • German roaches are light brown to tan in color. They have two horizontal dark stripes behind their heads that help to identify them.

Are German Cockroaches Something To Be Worried About In Denver?

  • Are cockroaches dangerous?

Cockroaches spread things like gastroenteritis and salmonellosis that can make people quite ill. Carrying and transmitting bacteria, triggering allergies and asthma attacks, and contaminating food, are some of the reasons why cockroaches are dangerous to have in our homes and businesses.

A cockroach infestation poses significant health risks, and these pests should never be in any home or business for any length of time. In addition, cockroach excrement stains walls, floors, and clothing. They also produce foul-smelling secretions that affect foods' flavor and are unpleasant to have around.

  • Why do I have a cockroach problem?

Cockroaches are resourceful, opportunistic, and adaptable; those three characteristics make it possible for these persistent pests to find a way into any home or business. Having cockroaches doesn't mean your home is unclean. Cockroaches finding a few crumbs lying around is all it takes for them to want to stay and use your house as a place to breed and feed.

Cockroaches will move into a home on their own, entering through small cracks and crevices they discover as they forage for food. They are also carried inside homes and other structures by people inside cardboard boxes, deliveries, grocery bags, furniture, or other items.

  • Where will I find cockroaches?

Cockroaches are significant pests in restaurants, hospitals, warehouses, offices, and buildings with food-handling or storage areas. After finding their way inside a home or business, cockroaches hide. Since cockroaches are nocturnal, it can take some time before you discover their presence. Often it takes waking up in the middle of the night and turning on a bathroom or kitchen light and seeing cockroaches scurrying across a counter or floor to realize there is a problem.

Where you find cockroaches does depend on their species. German cockroaches are among the most common type of roaches living across the country. They have adapted to living mainly indoors, and their small size allows them to hide easily. They hide in or near kitchens, bathrooms, and basements.

You'll find Oriental cockroaches living outside more often than German roaches. They like to live in garbage piles, sewers, mulch, leaves, under decks, and other places that provide them with a damp, dark area to hide. Inside, Oriental cockroaches prefer to stay at ground level and are found under sinks, near drains, and near water pipes.
