What are cockroaches?

Cockroaches are a type of insect. They are common inside our homes and businesses because they feed on many of the same foods we do; their love of food is what typically draws them to our indoor and outdoor spaces.

Cockroaches have a flattened body that is oval with a head concealed from above with a structure called a pronotum. Their long antennae help them to find their way through the dark and find food. A cockroach's six, spine covered legs enable them to move very quickly from hiding spot to hiding spot.

In Denver, two cockroach species regularly move into our homes and businesses: German cockroaches and Oriental cockroaches.

Oriental cockroaches have an elongated, pill-shaped body that is shiny black. These roaches are known for moving slower than other species of cockroaches.
German roaches are light brown to tan in color. They have two horizontal dark stripes behind their heads that help to identify them.

Are cockroaches dangerous?

Where you find cockroaches does depend on their species. German cockroaches are among the most common type of roaches living across the country. They have adapted to living mainly indoors, and their small size allows them to hide easily. They hide in or near kitchens, bathrooms, and basements.

You'll find Oriental cockroaches living outside more often than German roaches. They like to live in garbage piles, sewers, mulch, leaves, under decks, and other places that provide them with a damp, dark area to hide. Inside, Oriental cockroaches prefer to stay at ground level and are found under sinks, near drains, and near water pipes.
